A Happy Urge

It's Like a Board Game

It Passed!

Today the U.S. House passed the version of VAWA with explicit protections for LGBT, Native American and undocumented immigrant women.  CNN reported that Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wisc., herself a rape victim, made like Sojourner Truth during the debate, shouting "Ain't they women?" in reference to the three previously neglected groups.

And people say politics are boring.

There Is One Real Problem

From LGBT Equality World Wide

Oscar Night

I'd rather take out my own liver with tweezers than watch an awards show on TV.  But my other half, a dutiful Oscars watcher, tells me the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles has already appeared twice on this evening's broadcast.  And gay icon Barbra Streisand just sang "The Way We Were."  And there was a crack about the show not being gay enough.

Maybe I'll watch next year.

A Latter-Day Saint Comes Out

Jimmy Lee Hales, a student at Brigham Young University, decided to come out to his friends and family, and film the experience.  On the whole, folks take the news well.  But in the blurb accompanying the video on YouTube, Hales writes, "I'm still, and will forever be, a faithful Mormon, so it looks like I'm not going to marry and therefore live a single life through this mortal existence. Sucks."

Sure does.

My guess is the odds of his obeying the Mormon law of chastity for the rest of his days are about the same as the Angel Moroni forking over the golden tablets to Hillary Clinton.

Oscar Out

The South African version of It Gets Better will launch tomorrow, reports The Advocate, but the campaign to encourage LGBT youth has severed ties with one of its big names.

Oscar Pistorius, the Olympian who now stands accused of murdering his girlfriend, filmed a video for the campaign in which he said, "Just remember that you're special. You don't have to worry. You don't have to change. Take a deep breath and remember it will get better."

Or not.

There is something immoral and sick about using all of that power to not end brutality and poverty, but to break into people's bedrooms and claim that God sent you.

If the Boy Scouts start treating gays equally, they're going to become the first group to do it -- after the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Marines, the Coast Guard, all of the United Kingdom and Cher.
