The Christians Come Through

According to Right Wing Watch, fundamentalist Christian radio host Rick Wiles declared on Tuesday that Hurricane Harvey is God's punishment for Houston's "affinity for the sexual perversion movement."

Wiles said, "This is a proud city that, in recent years, has boasted of its allegiance, its dedication, its devotion to the homosexual/lesbian agenda."

And extremist pastor Kevin Swanson said today on his radio show that Hurricane Harvey is God's judgment on Houston because the city "was persecuting pastors and churches" and had "a very, very aggressively pro-homosexual mayor." Plus the Texas legislature failed to pass a bathroom bill.

Swanson added that Harvey is headed toward New Orleans as that city prepares to host Southern Decadence, which he described as "the largest sexual perversion event in the country."

For a while there I wondered if the level of human agony wrought by this hurricane had made these good Christian types think better of rushing to their default position, namely blame the LGBT folks.

But no. It's our fault. God's in his heaven and he hates our guts. Amen.

This Week's Quote

I don't believe Hurricane Harvey is God's punishment for Houston electing a lesbian mayor. But that is more credible than "climate change."

The Waiting Game

Who else is waiting for LGBT people to be blamed for Hurricane Harvey? It's as though a hurricane isn't complete until that soggy shoe drops.

One Nation Under Trump

Yesterday President Trump signed a directive banning transgender people from the military, and he pardoned former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, thereby signaling tacit approval of racial profiling.

What will he do today to further fragment America?  Send Louise Linton to Texas?

Hypocrisy Much?

President Trump addressed the nation on Monday evening on the subject of Afghanistan. He began his speech by praising the unity of America's diverse military. Trump stated, "When we open our hearts to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice, no place for bigotry and no tolerance for hate."

At bases everywhere, transgender service members fainted from the dissonance.

In news photographs and video, you catch other politicians glancing at the president in obvious bafflement. Not Pence. Never Pence. He moons. He beams. It’s 50 shades of infatuation.

The Right Atmosphere

Recently at a tony Washington, D.C., restaurant called the Prime Rib, a man and his male partner asked to split an ice cream sundae, only to hear their waiter say that two men eating out of the same bowl "doesn't go with the ambiance of the restaurant."

And bigotry does?

A Trio with Brio

Earlier this month in Sydney, Australia, a group of homophobes attacked 34-year-old Ivan Flinn, dislocating his jaw. He thought he was about to die.

But lo and behold, three guardian angels intervened. Their names were Coco Jumbo, Ivy Leaguee and Vybe–drag queens who'd performed earlier in the evening.

Flinn said "the next thing I knew Ivy went in and was scrapping with the guy who punched me. They’re in the middle of the road, cars swerving around them, tooting, and I saw the guy rip her wig off.

"They were bashing each other and she’s still wearing her high heels."

Coco said she threw a fellow into the gutter. "I don’t think they knew what they were getting themselves into. I used to play rugby league."

Ivy noted, "These big burly guys couldn’t even throw a punch, all they could do was pull hair and run."

The saviors' wigs and outfits were damaged in the fracas, but Coco said, "It’s all just materials at the end of the day, there’s no use crying over split lace."

Flinn, though, is showing his gratitude by raising funds to replace the battered attire. He's making sure his guardian angels look like queens.

Raising a Red Flag

Commentator Star Parker went on Fox News a couple of days after the events in Charlottesville to defend President Trump, and along the way she equated the Confederate flag with the rainbow flag, claiming, "These two flags represent the exact same thing: that certain people groups are not welcome here."

Exact same thing?  I don't know which side should be angrier, us or the Nazis.

This Week's Quote

Imagine if you're a Jewish person in Germany and you had to go to Hitler High School . . . that would be completely offensive to you on the deepest level and that's how people of color feel in this country when we have to deal with figures like Robert E. Lee [and] Confederate flags. It's no different than flying a swastika.

Birds of a Feather Sing Together

Randy Rainbow posted this photo on Facebook today and gave it the perfect caption:  "Guys, please stop calling them nazis. They prefer to be called the Gay Men's Chorus of Hate."

In Conclusion

PinkNews published a piece today listing some of the more bizarre studies about LGBT people.

"Researchers" have reached stunning conclusions, like over-indulging in fatty foods makes you gay; lesbianism developed because women being attracted to women excites men; similar magnet poles repel each other, proving same-sex attraction is unnatural; and women are either gay or bisexual, but never straight.

Such crap.  Except for that last one, which I feel deserves further study.

This Week's Quote

According to The New York Times, Vice President Mike Pence is planning on running for president if Trump doesn’t run for a second term. But he issued a statement strongly denying the article, saying it was disgraceful, offensive to me, my family and our entire team. He said to suggest he is running for president in 2020 is laughable and absurd. Right, why would Mike Pence want to be president in 2020? He’s going to be president much, much sooner than that.

A Silver Lining to the Military Mess

After President Trump tweeted his ban on transgender folk in the military, Coast Guard officials personally reached out to all 13 openly transgender members of the Coast Guard to offer support.

So said the leader of the Coasties on Tuesday. Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft himself contacted Lt. Taylor Miller, who was featured in a Washington Post article last week as the first openly transitioning officer in the Coast Guard.

"If you read that story, Taylor’s family has disowned her . . . And I told Taylor, I will not turn my back. We have made an investment in you and you have made an investment in the Coast Guard and I will not break faith," said Zukunft.

If you'd told me a year ago that a branch of the U.S. military would publicly support and protect its transgender members, I'd have blurted out, "Right, and Donald Trump will be commander in chief."

Um . . .
